Ostrov

Ostrov Cultural Center, Ostrov, Czech Republic

In cooperation with Memory of Nations, we created the animated film OSTROV: The Story of Building an Ideal City, which depicts the dark history of a city built by political prisoners. Its centerpiece is the Ostrov Cultural Center – an architectural icon of the 1950s, now sensitively reconstructed. The video is part of a new exhibition located directly in this building.

For one of the scenes in the documentary, we used a drone and photogrammetry to scan the infamous Red Tower of Death near Ostrov, which was part of the Vykmanov II communist labor camp. Today a national cultural monument and part of UNESCO World Heritage, it recalls the period when, between 1951 and 1956, political prisoners processed and sorted uranium ore here without protective equipment. Under these inhumane conditions, many died or suffered lifelong serious health consequences.
